Understanding the Criteria for SSD Benefits

While it is common to talk about disabilities in terms of the injuries that caused them, it is important to understand that as far as the Social Security disability system is concerned, the nature of the injury is less important than the consequences of the injury.

If you have become disabled in some way that prevents you from working, then you should be entitled to benefits, regardless of the nature of the injury that caused the disability. Common types of disabling impairments and conditions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Spine disorders
  • Vision loss
  • Chronic heart failure
  • Liver disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Schizophrenia

These impairments, and others, may or may not be judged serious enough to prevent someone from working. Each impairment must be evaluated on the basis of specific criteria that are used to decide whether the impairment is a total disability for work purposes.

Helping Clients With Multiple Impairments

Among the most difficult SSD cases are those involving multiple overlapping conditions. Even if no single condition prevents you from working, you may be considered combination impaired if the effects of multiple conditions prevent you from getting a generally available job.

Whether you have two physical conditions, a physical and a mental condition, or any other combination of conditions that prevent you from doing a job, we will work to demonstrate your disability status at any stage of the SSD process.
